You may remember back in February and March when I posted about Small Cat, the cat evicted from her home at Comma Coffee in Nevada due to “health concerns.”

Small Cat is back in the news today after the state health board denied a variance that would have allowed her to come back to the store.

Emotions were high on both sides, and some of Small Cat’s fans said they might appeal to the state legislature. I’d like to think that maybe the state legislature has more important things to deal with, but I also don’t understand what the big deal is. Comma Coffee is an independently owned business. If June Joplin, the owner, wants to have an entire cat circus in there, what’s the problem? As long as she posts a sign out front notifying people with allergies (or people who hate cats), why can’t Small Cat come back?

cat in exile still in exile: update

This is Small Cat.

You may remember her from a post back in February about her exile from her longtime home, Comma Coffee in Carson City, Nevada. To summarize: Small Cat lived happily in the coffee shop until an anonymous complaint was filed with the health department and she was sent to live at the owner’s home. More than 500 customers signed a petition asking the health department for an exemption (with another 800 signing online.) But then tragedy struck. The petition was stolen!

Luckily, Small Cat now has her own attorney, so here’s hoping she’ll be back at Comma Coffee soon.

cat in exile, fans press for return

This is Small Cat.

Until recently, she lived at Comma Coffee in Carson City, Nevada. Until, that is, the day when an anonymous woman complained about her presence to the health department and owner June Joplin was forced to take her home.

Now Small Cat’s a few blocks away, unhappy and confused. And her fans among the patrons of Comma Coffee feel the same way. They’ve started a petition to the health dept to bring her back. Joplin has even offered to post a sign in the window alerting any potential customers to the presence of the cat.

I wonder why the anonymous complainer didn’t just stop patronizing Comma Coffee if she disapproved of Small Cat’s presence. Why did she have to be such a bitch about it?
